How do you change an historic barracks building into a modern office building that will last for years to come?

Futures Without Violence San Francisco Presidio Building 100

Forell | Elsesser worked with the Presidio Trust by providing the structural engineering services for the seismic rehabilitation and adaptive re-use of a historic 1909, 34,000 s.f. “U” shaped barracks building built-in 1908 into new office space for the non-profit formerly known as the “Family Violence Prevention Fund”.

Customized Solution
  • The structural upgrade scheme being utilized to mitigate the seismic concerns for this 3-story, unreinforced masonry building is a combination of adding plywood sheathing at the roof level, installing new collectors, anchoring the floor and roof framing to the masonry walls, and shotcreting the interior face of the existing unreinforced masonry walls.
  • A new structure designed as a conference center was inserted inside the “U” plan of the building.
  • One of many historic barracks buildings restored on the Presidio Main Parade Ground.
